Ageing - The Therapeutic Target

WHY AGING IS THE PREFECT THERAPEUTIC TARGET

Aging is the perfect therapeutic target. Aging is the main cause of the chronic diseases (also conveniently known as THE CHRONIC DISEASES OF AGEING). Treating ageing intentionally, seeking to delay stop or even reverse the mechanisms of Ageing, prevents the development of these Chronic Diseases, reducing healthcare costs, suffering, death and increasing our quality of life.

Aging interventions aim to reduce our biological age. It is important to separate chronological age from biological age - the former is a NON-MODIFIABLE risk factor while the latter is MODIFIABLE - meaning through interventions we can modify it and its impact on the risk of developing illness. Biological Age is the MAIN risk factor for developing all of the Chronic Diseases, by some studies accounting for up to 80% of the risk of developing an illness like Type 2 Diabetes, Coronary Artery Disease or Dementia.

The recognition that true preventative health care involves addressing this enormous risk factor has led to the development of new fields of biomedical research - Geroscience and Biogerontology - and the advances in that field over the last 20 years have been dramatic, allowing Doctors and their patients to make informed choices about strategies to reduce age and the diseases and suffering caused by it.
