Immunosenescence: ageing of our immunity

Our immune system protect us from infections, illness and cancer. The correct function of the immune system also effectively regulates inflammation in our bodies.

The ageing of the immune system reduces its ability to defend the body from infections, respond appropriately to vaccination. An aged immune system is directly and intimately linked to the causes of general frailty and the Age Related Diseases including diabetes, alzheimers and cancer.

Immune senescence, the literal Ageing of the Immune System, is one of the driving causes of ageing and the Disease of Ageing, and is strongly and intimately linked to the inflammatory phenomenon of ageing, inflammaging. It is one of the great drivers of illness and infirmity as we age.

Age related involution of the Thymus, a small gland in the anterior chest cavity, is strongly linked to, and may be one of the main drivers of, the phenomenon of Immune Senescence.

Stimulation of the Thymus, or replacement of its function with thymic extracts and peptides, may represent a therapeutic target to fight back against ageing.
